Design Concept:

This garment is part of a series of art works based on fire and ice.  In these works,  fire and ice represent the conflicting emotions of passion for life, and fear, which often prevents full and joyful participation in life.

The ensemble begins with a fitted jacket of silk satin, hand painted with fiber reactive dye in the colors and patterns of fire.  The jacket is quilted on Cotton Classic batting, using Sulky rayon embroidery thread.  It is embellished with sculptural machine appliqués, made of silk satin flame fabric, cotton classic batting, and rayon embroidery thread.  The jacket lining is of china silk, painted with dye in the colors and patterns of ice crystals.

The skirt of the dress is constructed in two layers.  The top layer, attached to the bodice, is hand painted in flame colors.  The bottom layer, attached to an underskirt, and flowing from the bottom of the overskirt to the floor, is painted in the colors of ice.  The skirt is made from eleven yards of 5mm (very light weight) china silk, which was hand pleated by wrapping with string on a cylinder.  The skirt hangs straight when still, and flares out to form a full circle, when the model twirls on the runway.  It is meant to be in constant motion.

The bodice of the dress has short sleeves, a dropped waist, and an open back.  It is quilted, embroidered, and appliquéd in flame and ice patterns.  It combines silk satin fabric, painted in flame patterns, with the pleated ice fabric of the skirt.

A matching hat of the flame colored silk is embellished with a beaded snowflake.
