Design Concept

In 2009, I visited Paris and came across a wonderful farmers market in which all the produce was beautifully arranged. A photo of Savoy cabbages on a stack of shipping crates was one of my favorites of the trip. Ten years later, I created this design inspired by my original photo. The yellow and white curtain in the photo was abstracted into wavy stripes in intersecting gradations of yellow, white, and blue. The packing crates were also interpreted in fanciful colors. I digitally manipulated the cabbage photo, enhancing the color saturation and contrast and had it printed on cotton fabric. This was appliqued into the abstract background.
The light areas of the cabbages are quilted with fluorescent thread. The packing crate shapes are quilted in a wood grain pattern. I designed a binding fabric to match the texture of the cabbages. This was printed at the same time as the cabbage photo. The backing fabric was hand painted with dye.
