Design Concept

From the very first time I saw a picture of Antelope Canyon, I wanted to go there and in September of 2018 my husband Ron and I finally went. This is a narrow slot canyon in Northern Arizona with walls sculpted into sinuous curves, over millions of years, by water, wind, and sand. At noon each day the sun passes over the top of the canyon, casting shadows and highlights over the surface of the rocks. We took hundreds of photos, and this was one of my husband’s shots. I chose this one because it looked more like an abstract expressionist painting than a photograph.

I started by altering the photo, exaggerating the colors, and deepening the shadows. The altered image was printed on cotton fabric. I quilted very heavily, almost to the level of thread painting in some areas, with many different colors of thread. Rather than trying to exactly reproduce the photograph, I just treated it as an abstract design, and tried to capture, in fabric and thread, the drama that one feels upon see this amazing example of nature's art.
