Design Concept

This is part of a series in which 1/2" constructed tucks are incorporated into a patterned background This is also the sixth piece in which black & white checks are juxtaposed against a full spectrum of rainbow colors. A different color or gradation is used on each side of the ½” tucks, which are then twisted from side to side, creating the illusion of movement and light.

In this quilt, all of the tucks are black on the right sides, and the left sides are a rainbow gradation. The colorful checks in the background were created by overdyeing a 1” black and white stripe in a 24 shade rainbow gradation.

The border is made from a commercial print with rainbow checks.

The use of a traditional quilt block on the back of this contemporary art quilt is my tribute to the creativity of the many anonymous quilt artists of the past.
