| Design Concept The Fires of Autumn is about my feeling on a crisp October day
in Illinois, when I am surrounded by the fiery reds and oranges
of the Autumn foliage. This is one of a series of whole cloth painted
quilts. The fabric was first painted with fiber reactive dyes in
the fiery black and orange colors. The maple leaves were then painted
with semi opaque textile paint. The quilting emphasizes the shapes and details of the painted leaves,
then wanders off into a swirling pattern of spirals and other organic
shapes. All of the free-motion quilting was done freehand, with
no marking of the quilt top.
