| In February of 1999, my sister, Pat Howell, came for a
short visit to my northern Illinois studio. We decided to
spend our two days together making quilts for a great neice
and great nephew who had been born in recent weeks. Pat
did all of the ironing and pinning, and I did all of the
piecing and quilting, and before Pat's visit was over we
finished both quilts (two days), in time to deliver one
of them to one of the new babies, who lived in the Chicago
area. I started each quilt by drawing equilateral triangles in
two 36" squares. For these quilts I cut my strips 2.5"
wide, rather than the 1.5" size I have used in most
of my other Illusion quilts. To soften the look of the quilts,
I used a fourth gradation rather than black or a solid dark
color as the background for my light triangle. I skipped
the inner border which I customarily use in this style of
quilt and just used an extra wide outer border of hand painted
                      fabric. |
