                          | | This is part of a series of small works
in which my process is very much like doodling with fabric,
i.e. the design was developed spontaneously, working directly
on the background with bits of fabric and thread. The
design is loosly based on a 2"photograph of a Lemur
from a nature calendar. The design grew from back to front
as layers of fabric scraps were added and stitched one
                      after another.
The background fabric was hand painted with fiber reactive
dye. Scraps of fabric were laid on the painted background,
then stitched with layers of machine embroidery in various
                      colors of thread.
The embroidered composition was surrounded with a wide
border of painted fabric and quilted in a freeform design
                        that echoes the embroidered design.
