In February of 2020, (just before the virus shut everything down) we did a photography expedition to Antarctica with a group of 27 photographers, two of them world-famous. As our zodiacs floated among the towering icebergs, our repeated request to the expedition leaders was to find us some “nice ice.” It was like floating through a museum of gigantic modern art sculptures. This is the second of my “nice ice” photographs I chose to interpret.

A particularly interesting section of the iceberg was digitally painted on the touchscreen of my Microsoft Surface Design Studio computer. I repeated several of the shapes in the original photo and exaggerated the shadows and contours of the ice. My painted design was printed by Spoonflower. It is heavily thread-painted with many different colors and values of aqua, blue, and violet. The binding fabrics were designed especially for this quilt and printed at the same time. The backing fabric is from one of the collections I designed for Benartex.
