Design Concept

In the Spring of 2020, a northern harrier lit on an armature holding a suet feeder, just outside our breakfast room. We managed to open the window and snap several photos before it flew away. Later, in the same patch of forest, I photographed a different tree with branches about the same size as the armature. To create the design for this quilt, I combined the tree photo and two different photos of the harrier, then added digital painting to integrate the photos. I simplified the background with more digital painting and designed matching binding strips. The composition was printed on cotton fabric by Spoonflower. The harrier is heavily quilted, to the level of thread painting, the background is quilted in leaf patterns, and the tree is quilted in patterns that echo the texture of bark.
