Design Concept

This is one of a series of quilts in which three dimensional, constructed tucks are incorporated into a patterned background.  It is made from Benartex Fabrics from my first commercial collection. The fabrics are based on my hand painted originals. The background fabric is “Splash”, a freeform abstract design in rainbow colors.   

Each of the ½”  "tucks” was constructed from two different fabrics. The fabrics are from the Benartex Fossil Fern collection. The left sides of the tucks are a gradation of light to dark purple.  The right sides of the tucks are a gradation of rainbow hues.  The use of color gradations, and the twisting of the tucks from side to side, create the illusion of movement and light across the surface of the quilt.  Because different colors are used on the right and left sides of the three dimensional tucks, the appearance of the quilt can be changed significantly by changing your point of view.  I like to call the quilts in this series "viewer participation art."

The three dimensional center of the quilt is bordered by a narrow band of black fabric, followed by a wider border of rainbow hued fabric from my Ombre Strip collection.

In 2000 I titled a quilt Reflection #51. It sold very quickly and I did not document it at the time I finished it, other than taking slides. Two years later I named this quilt Reflection #51, having forgotten about the other one, so this is #51b and the 2000 version is 51a.
