Design Concept

This is one of a series of quilts in which three dimensional, constructed tucks are incorporated into a patterned background.  The background fabric was painted with fiber reactive dyes in large flower and leaf patterns.  These patterns represent the feeling of being among vibrant tropical flowers, and looking at them close up.  The larger than life flower forms do not represent any particular botanical species.

Each of the 1/2"  "tucks” was constructed from two different fabrics.  The right sides of the tucks were made from fabrics dyed in a gradation colors from purple to light green.  The left sides of the tucks begin at each edge with cool blues and purples, and gradually fade to hot fuchsias and oranges in the center.  The use of color and value gradations, and the twisting of the tucks from side to side, create the illusion of movement and light across the surface of the quilt.

A radiating, string pieced border surrounds the three dimensional center panel.  The border was made from alternating strips of blue and the graduated colors of the tucks
