Here fabrics from the Gradations collection are being auditioned on my ironing table

 | | Design ConceptFor many years a small clipping from a magazine hung over my desk. It was a picture taken through a microscope of spirogyra, a single-cell, filamentous algae, commonly known as pond scum. This the fifth quilt I have made, inspired by the patterns of dots and curving stripes found in that image. This one is quite different from the original inspiration, but evolved from the four previous quilt designs. This entire quilt is a study in intersecting color and value gradations. The wavy lines radiating from the center form transparencies where they cross the logarithmic spiral (a special kind of curve which often appears in nature). The fabrics used are all from my Gradations collection for Benartex.  The spiral and background were pieced using my hybrid “applipiecing” method. The dots were appliqued. | |

    | The spiral fabrics are quilted in a small meander pattern with matching thread. The radiating background segments are quilted in wavy lines that suggest algae in flowing water. The dots are unquilted. The binding is a dark rainbow fabric from the Gradations collection for Benartex. |
