        | This the seventh quilt I have made, inspired by the patterns of dots and curving stripes found in spirogyra (commonly known as pond scum) as seen under a microscope. This entire quilt is a study in intersecting color and value gradations. The wavy lines radiating from the center form transparencies where they cross the logarithmic spiral (a special kind of curve which often appears in nature). The design, which is based on my 2012 quilt Spirogyra #5, was digitally painted on the touch screen of my Microsoft Surface Design Studio computer and was printed by Spoonflower.com.The quilting around the dots is in a meander pattern with thread that matches the background fabric. The dots are unquilted, so they are slightly raised. The background curves which radiate from the center are quilted in a combination of spirals and echo quilting. The binding was specially designed for this quilt. The backing fabric is a one-of-a-kind, dye painted piece.
