        | In June of 2018, my husband Ron and I drove to Port McNeill on the north end of Vancouver Island and stayed at The Artists Point B&B, owned by professional photographer Rolf Hicker, with whom we booked three days of photo tours. (see the whole tour) On June 28 & 30, Rolf took us out in his boat for twelve-hour days of wildlife photography in the islands between Western British Columbia and Vancouver Island. In two different

Rolf set his boat to run as a steady speed that created a wake off the stern and the dolphins followed us, jumping through the wake and splashing back into the water, looking like they were having lots of fun. Ron was shooting ten frames per second with a fast shutter speed and caught several pictures of the frolicking dolphins. This quilt is based on the most graphic of those photos.
On my computer, I played with Ron's digital image, manipulating colors, contrast, etc. until it had the graphic qualities I liked. The result was printed on cotton fabric. Part of the quilt is an appliqued interpretation of the original photo, using commercial fabrics from my "Splash" collection for Benartex, and part is the manipulated photo, integrated into the applique. The whole thing is very heavily quilted with dozens of different colors of thread. Iridescent thread was used to make the splash sparkle. Dots of textile paint were added to enhance the splash.
