Design Concept

Back in 2003, while our neighbors near our Illinois farm were spreading herbicide on their lawns in the spring, I took great delight in the cheerful and ubiquitous dandelion.  At that time, I had begun printing my own fabric and had fun scanning the dandelions in our yard. Splendor in the Grass #4 is my most recent tribute to this persistent perennial. 

The dandelion blossoms and leaves were scanned on a flatbed scanner. The blossoms were laid directly on the glass and covered with a piece of blue fabric. The lid was left open.  Scanning at a high resolution resulted in large images showing sharp details.  The scanned images were edited and enhanced in Corel Draw, and some of the backgrounds were digitally painted. The Fibonacci progression (1-2-3-5-8-13 etc.) was used to determine the proportions of the squares and rectangles.  The dandelion images are surrounded by a border of dark blue and green fabric from my Glacier Park Collection by Benartex, which is based on my original hand dyed fabrics.
