This quilt was made for a special exhibition of work by Peninsula Fiber Artists in collaboration with a group of poets in Port Angeles, Washington. The poem I chose, by Emma Amiad, was about being caught in a dust devil.
I made a simple line drawing of a jumping figure and four overlapping circles then turned the spaces between the lines into separate shapes. Using a swirl function in Corel Photo-Paint, I distorted a photo of one of my hand-dyed fabrics and clipped it into all the shapes in my drawing. Using various hue, saturation, contrast, and intensity functions I changed the colors and values in the individual shapes. This created enough contrast that the figure and circles stood out against the background. Because position of the fabric photo was not moved, the swirling pattern in the background continues through all the shapes creating the illusion of transparency.
After designing matching binding strips, I sent the whole image to Spoonflower to be printed on cotton fabric. The quilting was done with very light turquoise thread which contrasts with the colors of the quilt top and echoes the swirling pattern in the background fabric.
