One of the rules I set for myself in most of my designs is to avoid tangent edges that create visual tension and pull the eye away from the focal point or off the edge of the composition. In this quilt, I challenged myself to make a design in which all the edges are tangent. I began with simple triangles whose points all intersected with the side edges of other triangles.
I filled the spaces between the lines with solid color gradations to create a canvas for playing with machine quilting patterns. I tried many different arrangements of color and value. When I had a design I liked, I designed matching binding strips, turned the whole composition into a single bitmap, and sent the digital file to Spoonflower.com to be printed on cotton fabric. In the colored spaces I had fun playing with many different free-motion machine quilting patterns. |
