This quilt was inspired by a call by SAQA for quilts on the theme of fungi. I found many beautiful photos of fungi by other artists, but only wanted to use my own photos, or photos taken by my husband Ron when we were traveling together.
One day at the Saturday the farmers' market in Port Townsend, Washington I saw a beautiful oyster mushroom that looked like a piece of sculpture. I photographed the mushroom and then asked Kyle Beckhorn, the fellow who grew it, and was selling it, to pose with it and a handful of other mushrooms. That photo was more interesting than the mushroom alone.
The front of this quilt is a digital collage of three different photos: one of Kyle holding the mushrooms, one of the sign above his booth at the market, and one of a display of chanterelles taken by my husband, Ron, at a market in Stockholm Sweden, which I used as background. I used a transparency function to fade the chanterelle photo to a dark navy blue behind the oyster mushroom, so it would stand out and become a focal point.
On the back of the quilt, I used a photo of Ron cooking that oyster mushroom, several hours after I bought it at the market. His image is emerging from the same chanterelle photo used on the front.
The photo collages were printed on cotton fabric by Spoonflower. The free motion quilting was done with black polyester thread and polyester monofilament. |
