Design Concept

In 2025, I resurrected a series of designs I drew in 1995, based on radially symmetrical hexagons.

I placed the hexagonal shape in a rectangle and played with it, extending the lines within the hexagon to the edges of the rectangle and tweaking them until I had a line drawing I liked. I turned the line drawing into a series of closed shapes and filled the spaces between the lines with colors and gradations in cool tones. I added additional shapes to make the design more interesting. I photographed a fabric which I hand painted and used the photographic image to fill the background shapes.
When I was satisfied with the design and colors, I did some additional playing with a hue function to reverse the colors to their compliments (opposites on the color wheel).

I turned the second color variation into a square rather than a rectangle and had both versions printed in different sizes. This design, the larger of the two, was delayed at the printer, so I quilted the smaller, warmer hued piece first, making this #2 in the series.

Hi-Def Detail

This piece was heavily quilted with dozens of different decorative patterns. I used contrasting colors of #40 polyester and acrylic threads so the patterns would be visible from a distance. Although the design is non-representational, it has many of the shapes and colors that are found in nature, especially in the plant world. I invented a title that sounded like the scientific name for a plant species.

Just for fun, I added a quilted humming bird in the lower right corner. The shape of the humming bird came from a photo my husband Ron Gentry took in my garden in 2019. I invented the colors.

The backing fabric, in two color-ways is from one the collections I designed for Benartex.
