Design Concept

The design for this quilt began with a series of thumbnail sketches with wavy lines, radiating from a corner. I penciled in connections in many different ways, and picked the one I likes the best. The finished design looked like some kind of vine, growing out of a leafy base. The top was pieced from three fabrics in my Gradations collection for Benartex, and additional fabrics from my Ombré Stripe and Atmosphere collections were added to form the leaves at the bottom left corner.

All of the curved seams in this quilt were joined using "Applipiecing", a technique I developed in 1989 to make curved seams fast, easy, and accurate. Instructions for applipiecing can be found atPaper Pieces and at Joy's Fabrics & Quilts .

The leafy shapes in the lower left corner were quilted with leaf vein patterns with a different color of thread on each side of the center vein. The buds were quilted with fluorescent red thread.
