Design Concept
My intention in designing this quilt was to create a fabric
landscape with a very literal, three dimensional foreground,
fading into a more abstract background. This landscape became
a composite of my favorite springtime images. This was not
my first piece of art about irisis. I had previously made
a stained glass window and a screen printed textile design
with the same theme. The irisis in my own garden were the
inspiration for this theme. (see pictures below).
My first step was to cut a 2" strip of almost every
fabric I owned. More than three hundred different fabrics
comprised my "palette" of colors. I strip pieced
these different print and solid fabrics together in sets of
three related colors.

After doing a series of preliminary sketches (see below),
the composition was drawn full size on bristol board and pinned
to the wall of my studio. The garden scene within the window
is divided into a series of rhomboid shaped blocks. Using tracing
paper, I traced one block at a time, and the shapes within the
block. These tracing paper patterns became the templates for
cutting the pieces out my strip pieced fabric. As each block
was pieced, it was pinned to the corresponding section of the
large drawing. Finally, the blocks were pieced together with
the bias cut lattice strips. The finished quilt took three months
of intensive work to complete, and the hand quilting took an
additional two months. The back of the quilt is a single piece
of muslin, hand dyed to look like sky. |

The branch in the quilt came from just outside our

The lattice and scrollwork in the arch came from woodwork I created
