Concept This is the third in a series of painted quilts. The fabric was painted with
fiber reactive dye in an expressionistic design. A few small bits of fabric
dyed in color gradations were cut into circles and leaf shapes and machine
appliquéd on the surface. The fabric was then layered and quilted heavily
by machine in various organic patterns, which were stitched freehand, and
incorporated the appliquéd shapes. The machine quilting becomes a major
design element in this piece, providing a foreground dimension that is contrapuntal
to the painted design. This quilt was made in the early spring of 1994, following a particularly
long and bitterly cold winter. It reflects my feeling of delight at the unfolding
and emerging of the natural surroundings at that time of the year. | |
