Design
Concept
This is one of a series of whole cloth quilts exploring spontaneous designs,
created by painting fabric with fiber reactive dye, then quilting the design
to give it definition and relief. The design of this fabric painting reminded
me of evening at the pond on our farm in Missouri, with the setting sun reflecting
on the water. The fabric was quilted heavily by machine in a freeform pattern
with no marking of the quilt top. Most of the quilting was done with #30 cotton
top stitching thread. However in several areas, fluorescent polyester thread
was used to accentuate the reflective quality of the water. The machine quilting
is a major design element in this piece, providing a foreground dimension
that echoes the patterns of the liquid dyes as they flow together on the cloth. |
