Concept This is one of a series of quilts in which three dimensional, constructed tucks are incorporated into a pieced background.  Cotton fabric dyed in muted gradations of rainbow colors was used to construct the tucks.  A different gradation of color was used on each side of the tucks.  A third color gradation was used in the background of the interlacing arcs, and the outside border.  The use of color gradations and the twisting of the tucks create the illusion of movement in the foreground.   This was the first quilt in which I experimented with combining my three dimensional "tucks" with string piecing and curved seams.   The colorful tucks are juxtaposed against a geometric background, pieced in shades of brown.  The use of brown and soft muted color gradations suggests the feeling of a crisp, sunny, autumn day. The traditional quilt block, "Dove in the Window,” used on the back of this contemporary quilt, is my tribute to the creativity of the anonymous quilt artists of the past. |
