This quilt was inspired by the color field paintings of Marc Rothko in the mid-nineteen hundreds. Since most of my designs are very complex and filled with pattern, I thought it would be interesting to show some restraint and make a design with very few separate shapes. I drew a digital design with three horizontal rectangles on a medium gray background. I filled the shapes with photographic images of fabrics I dye-painted by hand. I added a single rectangle to each horizontal rectangle and filled them with the same images in opposite colors. With digital painting I blended and softened the edges of all the rectangles. I designed matching binding strips and send the composite image to Spoonflower to be printed on cotton fabric. In the free-motion quilting I started by following some of the subtle textures and patterns in the fabric and then continued making up the patterns as I stitched. |
