Design
Concept
This is one of a series of quilts in which
three dimensional, constructed tucks are incorporated into
a pieced background. The fabrics used to piece the background
were hand dyed in the three primary colors (fuchsia, turquoise,
yellow) and the three secondary colors (purple, green, orange).
Each color was dyed in graduated tints and shades from white
to black. Interlocking zigzags of black, white, grey, and
rainbow stripes break the surface of the primary and secondary
colors.
Each of the 1/2" "tucks" were
constructed from two different fabrics. The left sides of
the tucks are the three primary colors in gradations from
white to black. The right sides of the tucks are a 44 hue
spectrum of pure "rainbow" colors. The use of
color and value gradations, and the twisting of the tucks
from side to side, create the illusion of movement and light
across the surface of the quilt.
A radiating border continues the visual motion
of the center panel while drawing the eye toward the center.
It is constructed of alternation strips of fabric dyed in
color and value gradations.
This quilt was constructed during a session
as "Artist in Residence" at the Quilting by the
Lake Symposium in Morrisville, New York in the Summer of
1991.
