Design Concept
"Q" was made especially for Character Traits,
a traveling invitational exhibition of quilts that focus
on the graphic possibilities of the letters of the alphabet.
It occurred to me that the hand and the quilting hoop actually
form the letter Q, so I decided on that image for my quilt.
The Quilt was designed on the computer, using Corel Draw.
Q's in various fonts form a black and white checkerboard
background. The black Q's were photocopied directly onto
white fabric. The white Q's were stenciled onto black fabric.
The traditional quilt block was pieced, using solid and
hand painted fabrics, then appliquéd to the background.
The hand is holding a real needle, with a loose thread running
through it.
