Design Concept
This is the third in a series of quilts in which traditional string
piecing is combined with precision "paper' piecing of triangles
(flying geese) in a curve. The intertwing of the curved templates
represents the entanglement of a full time corporate job, interfering
with my desire to be free to pursue a full time career as an artist.
This quilt was made shortly before I retired from my 28 year career
with United Airlines. The irony, of course, was that the job which
was preventing me from having what I imagined would be the ultimate
feeling of freedom (flying) was in fact flying.
The fabrics in this quilt were hand dyed in gradations of color
and value and hand painted in multiple colors to create visual texture. This piece was made as a commission for private collectors in New York.
