Design Concept

This is one of a series of quilts in which three dimensional, constructed tucks are incorporated into a pieced background.  The fabrics used to piece the background were hand dyed in light to dark gradations of rust and turquoise, as well as gradations that cross between the two colors.  The background was string pieced, then cut into strips and reassembled with a tuck in each seam.

Each of the 1/2"  "tucks” was constructed from two different fabrics. A different gradation of colors and values is used on each side of the tucks.  The use of color and value gradations, and the twisting of the tucks from side to side, create the illusion of movement and light across the surface of the quilt.

A radiating border continues the visual motion of the center panel of the quilt, while drawing the eye toward the center.  It is constructed of alternating strips of fabric, dyed in two different color and value gradations.

A traditional quilt block is pieced into the back of this quilt using some of the fabrics left from the front.  My use of a traditional quilt block on the back of this contemporary art quilt is my tribute to the creativity of the many anonymous quilt artists of the past.
